    The Impressions' This is My Country () is basically my introduction to Curtis Mayfield along with his famed group. I am new to Mayfield's music because I did not grow up in that era (born in the 80's) but am growing in my interest for good soul music. Previously, I only had one solo work by Mayfield, the classic Superfly soundtrack/5(20).

    Dec 10,  · This is easily my favorite Impressions album. Beautiful and powerful in equal measures. Civil rights movement optimism and anger over the loss of MLK shaking hands with the various yearnings of the heart. Curtis Mayfield always spoke truly from his own heart, and this is a fine example of it/5.

    May 12,  · The pressing of the LP This Is My Country looks and reads as if it should be a protest album by Chicago-based The Impressions. However, aside of the title track, the album was anything but. For example, the Curtis Mayfield-penned track ‘Stay Close To Me’ sounds more like upbeat Motown than gritty Chicago soul.

Despite the Impressions late sixties work being known for their social or inspirational viewpoint such as the title track "This Is My Country" and "They Don't Know" the rest of the songs feature Mayfield's soul based love songs.
